Hyundai is offering free software updates in smartphone-integrated cars to several existing models via do-it-yourself installation. This is not the first time Hyundai has made a software upgrade available using the MyHyundai portal – the new update is compatible with Hyundai Android Auto and CarPlay powered by iPhone.

MyHyundai.com gives customers the option to update their car for free on their own schedule, and those who wish you avoid the technical glitches can head to their dealers with an installation fee, starting in June.

You usually have to get a car with Android Auto pre-installed if you want the feature to ever be available to you, but Hyundai has embraced Google’s car platform more so than others. It just announced an update is available for some of its 2015, 2016, and 2017 models that add Android Auto and CarPlay.

In order to complete the software upgrade, owners need their VIN number and a USB memory stick or the SD card from their Navigation system. The car major has put an installation guide on MyHyundai.com to give the customers a complete walkthrough during software installation. In a press release, Hyundai states that in the coming future, consumers will have access to do-it-yourself installation videos on its official Hyundai USA Youtube Channel.

You can check your car’s eligibility for the software update online – just log into the My Hyundai site to see if your particular model and variant are included. Owners of Hyundai models from 2015 like Sonata, Santa Fe, Genesis, Elantra GT, and Tucson can update the software; other versions are supposed to have the update soon. The software update can take a maximum of three hours based on the internet speed, model variations, and time of production.

Hyundai will soon make an announcement about CarPlay and Android Auto upgrades for the following 2016 model-year vehicles equipped with improved navigation.
