Adobe Flash today is very important for browsers to support ads and other interactive content. In modern browsers, web standards are pioneered by Microsoft, Adobe, Google, Apple, Mozilla, and many others are now enabling sites to exceed those experiences without Flash and with improved performance and security.

The Windows 10 Anniversary Update introduced a new change to Microsoft Edge which is the default browser in the new OS. Microsoft gives the user the ability to pause non-essential “peripheral” Flash content, such as animations and ads.

The software’s next release will extend the current functionality and “encourage the transition to HTML5 alternatives by providing additional user control over when Flash content loads” i.e. it will start making Flash Click-to-Run.

Crispin Cowan, Senior Program Manager of Microsoft Edge explains how it works. “Sites that support HTML5 will default to a clean HTML5 experience. In these cases, Flash will not even be loaded, improving performance, battery life, and security. For sites that still depend on Flash, users will have the opportunity to decide whether they want Flash to load and run, and this presence can be remembered for subsequent visits.”

Flash Block

As we all know that Flash is an integral part of many web experiences today. To ease the transition to HTML5, these changes initially will not affect the most popular sites which rely on Flash today.

The Click-to-Run feature will not only make your browsing experience a little cleaner, and a bit more pleasant, but it will also make it more secure. Because Flash content doesn’t even load until you click on it and ask it to do. Due to this, it not only provides security to sites but has improved battery life and performance.

The browser update will be rolled out as part of the forthcoming Windows 10 Creators Update next year, although Windows Insiders will have the chance to try it out in future builds.
