For the last few weeks, fake news and hoaxes were the buzzwords on the internet. Amid the US election, Facebook was blamed – as the media platform was used for the spreading of fake news. Facebook announced that the company has taken some steps to address fake news and hoaxes in News Feed.

The social media major in a blog post listed the plan of the company along with the future feasible testing and the starting plans to fight the issue. Facebook’s algorithm shows the most trending news on a user profile – this motivates people and raised their voices even if they are fully focused on approaching this problem. Fake news has become a major problem for them, which is an instrument played by spammers and third-party organizations.

Facebook’s VP, News Feed Adam Mosseri commented, “We believe in giving people a voice and that we cannot become arbiters of truth ourselves, so we’re approaching this problem carefully. We’ve focused our efforts on the worst of the worst, on the clear hoaxes spread by spammers for their own gain, and on engaging both our community and third-party organizations.”

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook last month announced that the company has taken necessary actions to prevent any misinformation. Now the company is testing on some new updates to keep track of the fake news and hoaxes.

There are some ways to keep the experience of Facebook users using four major steps. Basically, this is a way to learn from these tests and iterate and extend them over time.

Facebook fake news feed

1. Reporting – If users has any doubt regarding the fake news, they can report the post as fake news just by clicking the upper right side of the post.

2. Flagging Stories as Disputed – if the fact-checking organization caught the story as fake, it will have geared to with flag dispute, and a corresponding link will be appeared over there.

3. Informed Sharing – Informed sharing is a new feature to stop spreading the news and misleading people. If the news is flagged as fake this signal into ranking, specifically for articles that are outliers, where people who read the article are significantly less likely to share it.

4. Disputing Financial Incentives for Spammers – Buying side, eliminated the ability to spoof domains, which will reduce the prevalence of sites that pretend to be real publications. “On the publisher side, we are analyzing publisher sites to detect where policy enforcement actions might be necessary,” said Facebook.

Since allegations spread out against Facebook social media has taken corrective measures to address the issue. But don’t worry, Mosseri wrote, “We’re going to keep working on this problem for as long as it takes to get it right.”
