Today Facebook announced three updates to Trending, this feature shows popular topics being discussed on Facebook by people but maybe not seen in their News Feeds.
According to Facebook, the update consists of three changes are:
- Trending topics will now feature a publisher headline below each topic name
- An improved system to determine what is trending
- Everyone in the same region will see the same topics
The first change is quite notable because the company removed descriptions about the topics earlier in August. But it helped a lot in how events were described which removed a good deal of context. Now Facebook is focusing on publisher headlines instead of adding extra details to how events were described. According to Facebook, the headlines are chosen based on a combination of factors including the engagement around the article on Facebook.
According to Facebook, the second change is determining its trending topics from huge sources. Facebook will analyze how many publishers are posting about the topic but in previous topics need to be simple because a single post contains a ton of engagement.
On the Third change, the list of topics that are trending on Facebook will not be personalized anymore. Everyone in the same region will see the same topics which become easier for people to discuss current events. This comes into the picture to make sure that people don’t miss important.
The social media giant was in the news after it was blamed for its algorithm adding fake news to the trending topics during the US election. After the allegation sparked Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the company is working on an update of its algorithm which decides Trending news. With the new updates, users will see more relevant topics which will be selected by a magic algorithm, and reviewed by a team to make sure there isn’t anything wrong. If concerning about the new system, publishers get shared most often which looks like a step in the right direction for a more balanced look at trending topics. Hopefully, it will also help.
