It is often observed that intimate photos are shared on Facebook due to personal grudges, which make the other person embarrassed on various social sites such as Facebook and Instagram. Therefore, Facebook on Wednesday unboxed new tools that will help combat “revenge porn” or the consensual sharing of intimate images. Such as what happened in the recent Marine corps recruit nude photo scandal.

We are constantly looking to build and improve the tools that we offer and it became very apparent to us that this was a problem occurring across many regions that created unique harm – Antigone Davis, Facebook’s Global Head of Safety, told the BBC.

The study conducted by the Data and Society Research Institute in 2016 reports that about one in 25 people say they’ve either had intimate images uploaded online without their permission or encountered individuals who blackmailed them into doing such a thing.

Facebook explanation to use the tools:

  • When you see an intimate image that is not to be shared but was shared without your approval, then you can directly fire complain by using the “Report” link that appears when you tap on the downward arrow or “….” Next to the post.
  • Facebook’s trained representatives from the Community Operations team will review the image on Facebook Messenger and remove it if it violates their Community Standards. The social media sites said that in most cases, it would also disable the account for sharing intimate images without permission.
  • The new feature will allow Facebook to block further attempts by someone if the same type of image has been posted on social media with its photo-matching technologies. If someone tries to share the image after it’s been reported and removed, we will alert them that it violates our policies and that we have stopped their attempt to share it.

On the launch of these new tools Rep. Jackie Speier, a California Democrat who has been always fighting against the proliferation of revenge porn, commented that “These new tools are a huge advancement in combatting non-consensual pornography and I applaud Facebook for their dedication in addressing this insidious issue, which impacts the lives of individuals and their loved ones across the country and around the world”.
