Google has announced that it will launch a new Backup and Sync tool for Google Drive users, to be available from June 28, 2017. This new feature will allow users to monitor and backup files of any folders that they desire, making it more robust. The latest version of Google Drive for Mac/PC is Backup, and Sync is now already incorporated with the Google Photos desktop uploader.

The upcoming ‘Backup and Sync’ app will replace the existing Google Drive uploader client. It will be incorporated with the desktop Google Photos uploader.

The main purpose of the Backup and Sync tool is to support consumer users. Users will have to sign in via Google Accounts for continuous Backup of folders to Google Drive accounts using this new app. But, there should be sufficient storage on your Google Drive for backup. At present, Google provides 15GB of Google Drive storage for free. But, if the user requires more cloud space, then there is a provision to increase your storage by purchasing it.

According to Google, this new app is only for normal users. The G Suite customers continue to use Drive for Mac/PC until there is the new enterprise-focused solution, Drive File Stream (currently in EAP), which is made generally available to all G Suite Basic, Business, Enterprise, Education, and Nonprofit domains later this year. Drive File Stream will allow users to access huge corporate data sets without taking up the equivalent space on their hard drives.

Therefore, Google will not mechanically upgrade G Suite users from Drive to Backup and Sync for Mac/PC. Users will be able to download and upgrade Backup and Sync from June 28 for installing Drive for Mac/ PC on their computers. If your organizations do not allow it, then users won’t be able to use Backup and Sync with their G Suite accounts.
