The to-be-launched operating system of Google is already named Android 8.0, and it is codenamed Android O. Though there are still arguments about whether the O means Oreo or Oatmeal Cookie, it is yet to be officially confirmed. But the naming part based on biscuits is only the beginning of the upcoming update.

Google confirmed Android O’s launch to happen within the third quarter of this year. The fourth and the last Developer Preview for the OS has already been rolled out, meaning that it is to come out any moment now. According to numerous sources, the release is to happen in August 2017, though a specific date is yet to be confirmed.

Android 8.0 will be available for AOSP (Android Open Source Project) and the OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers). A number of new features are to come up with the operating system. These include application badges, picture-in-picture, automatic filling support, notification dots, higher text selection, a significant improvement in the notification system, new icon, new media notification, clock, and more.

The Android O timeline has seen the First Developer Preview launch in mid-March of 2017. Mid-May saw its sequel edition bringing new content for the OS. The Third Developer Preview was rolled out in June for Nexus (5X, 6P, and Player) and Pixel (Pixel, C, and XL) devices with new APIs. July is most likely to see the final preview before the Stable ROM launch, which fits the possible August release of Android 8.0.
