Twitter will start enforcing updates to the Twitter Rules from today. The announcement came last month. These updates aim to reduce hateful and abusive content on Twitter. The development and the implementation to these changes are subject to a collaborative approach that includes working in close coordination with experts on Trust and Safety Council.

According to these new updates, specific threats of violence or wishing for serious physical harm, death, or disease to an individual or group of people is strictly prohibited. Accounts affiliating with organizations that use or promote violence against civilians to further their causes will be banned. Groups that promote violence, both on and off the platform, will also be banned. The military and government entities are excluded from these terms, though. Groups currently engaging in or have already engaged in peaceful resolution will also be treated as an exception. Contents glorifying violence or the perpetrators of violent acts will be removed & if repeated for certain times, will lead to the permanent suspension of the account.

Any sort of violence that affects people on the basis of their group characteristics or harasses intimidates or uses fear to silence another person’s voice will be dealt with seriously. Internal tools have been developed to identify accounts that abuse or threaten others through their profile information including their username, display name, or profile bio, accounts that contain violent threat or multiple slurs, epithets, racist or sexist tropes, accounts that incite fear, try to reduce someone to less than human, exhibit hateful imagery like logos, symbols or images whose purpose is to promote hostility and malice against others based on their race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or ethnicity or national origin. These accounts will be subjected to profile-level reports and will require the account owners to remove the violating media.

Twitter is trying really hard to create a safer environment for everyone. What do you think about these improvements? Do let us know in the comments section below.
