The cloud computing subsidiary of Alibaba Group has upgraded ET to ET Brain, as revealed by Min Wanli, the company’s Chief Scientist in machine learning. The Alibaba Cloud ET was unveiled in 2016 with a single intelligent capability. Its upgraded module now packs multiple intelligent capabilities to serve multi-industry applications.

In 2016, ET had integrations of cognitive powers of images, speeches, human faces, natural languages, and more. It was also the first AI of the world based on a brain-like makeover. In 2017, Alibaba Cloud was able to combine AI techs and big data cloud computing capability with knowledge on industries, ultimately leading to the upgrade.

The company is not just stopping there but has further started plans for recruiting AI partners around the world. The aim is to strengthen ET Brain to turn it into an open AI ecosystem. This will again open spaces for ET Brain to expand its operations on manufacturing, finance, retail, smart home devices, and city administration.

While this already looks a massive task to accomplish altogether for one ecosystem, Alibaba Cloud has faith on its three principles for AI-based application. These are sufficient data for upgrading AI capability, sufficient computing capability for supporting algorithm and deep learning, and scenario-focused abilities for solving problems to reduce cost and enhance efficiency.

Back in October this year, Alibaba Cloud came up with AliOS Things that is the operating system dedicated to open-source implementation for IoT applications. 17 International IC makers, like STMicroelectronics and China-based makers, have gone on to develop 21 models supported by the AliOS chips.

Alibaba Cloud has also offered the AliOS Lite, which is a lighter version of the operating system. This can be used in IoT devices that require lower CPU and memory performance, like smartwatches and smart speakers.

As many as 17 chip makers including Intel, Spreadtrum Communications, NXP Semiconductors, and MediaTek have planned to support the AliOS Lite. Both AliOS Things and AliOS Lite will be available in 2018 on many platforms.
