The iPhone’s notch design has been trending for quite a while, as we have also seen a couple of Chinese Android phones cloning the design. Google’s upcoming Android software smartphone also plans to embrace the notch-like design, according to people who are familiar with the situation. This shows the effort of Google to persuade iPhone users to switch to Android smartphones.

As reported by Bloomberg, the Android update will also integrate Google’s digital assistant; it will improve the phone’s battery life and support new designs, like multiple screens and foldable displays, the people added.

While Android is much used in the middle and low-end of the global smartphone market, Apple targets to the higher-end users who spend more on apps and other services. Mimicking iPhone X, the cutout is believed to be where Android smartphone makers will be placing cameras and other sensors to help Android phones compete with Apple devices in the high-end market. Android is not only cloning Apple’s notch design but also their technology.

Google controls the Android software, while there are also other companies that manufacture Android devices and have the ability to tweak the software to their specific needs, and so it is reported that not all Android phones will have notches. The Android smartphone maker Samsung had criticized the new design of the iPhone X just like many other users in a commercial, but now it is for the same design.

The new Google Android update, referred to as Android P, will emphasize Google’s Assistant, a digital helper that competes with Apple’s Siri and Amazon Inc.’s Alexa. With its assistance, the search bar on the Android home screen will also be integrated, although nothing has been yet confirmed by the company for this year.

Every new Android version is named after a desert. Reports suggest that internally Google is calling the latest one Pistachio Ice Cream but the company also uses different other official names.
