The fact that Microsoft is working on a completely new and unprecedented form factor is perhaps the worst kept secret in the world of technology, and the reports have been pouring in one after the other since 2017, when some Microsoft patents were made public. To add to the list of leaked information, h0x0d has unearthed on Twitter the latest patent entitled “Magnetic Block Locking of an Electronic Device”, filed in August 2016.
The foldable Microsoft Andromeda tablet is said that it can transform from a slate to a smartphone-sized handset. Its dual screens can make or take calls and allows users to take notes on both screens simultaneously, a feature that gives the feeling of taking notes on paper-based notebooks.
The latest patent details how the form factor may be handled. From its abstract, the Microsoft Andromeda tablet has embedded magnetic locking mechanisms in its display. This shall allow the form factor to become locked in a certain folded state. Pivots and magnetic shielding are being used to facilitate the smooth functioning of the magnetic locks, while the hinges have been designed in a manner so as to allow the device to rotate in 360˚.
From information gathered so far, it seems that Surface Andromeda will be powered by Snapdragon 845 and feature 64 GB or 128 GB storage. While touch will be its primary input method, it will also feature pen support for note-taking and inking experiences. Being ARM-powered, the device might be expected to have excellent battery life, lasting a day on single charge. It shall run on Andromeda OS, the first iteration of Windows 10 that will ship under Microsoft’s Windows Core OS effort. While nothing has been made official yet, it is expected that the device may be launched sometime later in the year.
