BrahMos, the Indian supersonic missile, was successfully test-fired today on March 22 with an indigenous seeker in Pokhran, Rajasthan. This fuels the ‘Make in India’ campaign initiated by PM Narendra Modi, where the nation was for the first time able to develop a seeker for a missile of such class and caliber!

The BrahMos weapon system is described as one of the world’s most formidable and precision-strike weapons. Developed jointly by India and Russia, it “flee in its designated trajectory and hit the target with pinpoint accuracy,” as said by government sources.

Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that the success would fortify national security. She congratulated BrahMos, DRDO, and Indian scientists.

With today’s successful test flight we taken yet another important step towards building indigenous defence equipment manufacturing capability. We have demonstrated that Indian scientists can develop the world’s most advanced technology and equipment. – Sudhir Mishra, CEO and MD of BrahMos Aerospace

The development of the seeker is a joint effort of his and Dr. S Christopher, DRDO Secretary.

BrahMos, several months before, was successfully test-fired from Sukhoi-30 MKI, the multirole fighter jet. It was the first time (again) that a missile heavy as BrahMos was fit for a frontline fighter jet!

This is a very very big breakthrough and I would like to congratulate Indian scientists because the country will no longer have to depend on help for such an important component of the missile. Also, once the indigenous seeker is tested extensively and proves its capability, the knowledge can be used for other missile systems as well. – Avinash Chander, former DRDO chief.

Bringing further pride to the nation is herself now being a part of MTCR (Missile Technology Control Regime). BrahMos, therefore, gets to have a range of 450 km, surpassing 300 km. India and Russia are on the way to making it to 800 km, arming India with ultimate firepower against Pakistan and China together.

BrahMos missile can be fired from not just jets but also in land and water, from ships and submarines. This makes it superlatively capable. It even has a top-charting success rate in the world! Being a two-stage missile, it is able to attain 2.8 Mach of cruise speed. It possesses the finesse of carrying a conventional warhead of about 300 kg! In the sea, it can be launched in both vertical and inclined configurations. Many countries like Chile and Vietnam already showed interest in the missile. No wonder!
