India’s space agency, The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is examining how to create habitation on the moon. Besides exploring on satellite, ISRO is working on a new project about building structures on the moon in shape similar to that of an igloo where astronauts can stay safe in the vacuum environment, where the temperature swings between extremes.

The junior minister for space in the Prime Minister’s Office, Jitendra Singh, told the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, March 21 that ISRO “is doing experimentation on potential structures for lunar habitation.”

In response to a question on ISRO’s further experiments, Singh answered that the current study is “more towards futuristic developments.” According to reports, China to plans to land a probe this year on the yet-to-be-known dark side of the moon, where radio signals from Earth can’t be received.

Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, also boosts the exploration by including a satellite launch to look for disaster risks and provide information for mitigation, recovery, and response. To study lunar topography, elemental abundance, mineralogy, lunar exosphere, and signatures of hydroxyl and water-ice, India plans to send an orbiter, a lander and a rover to the Moon.

ISRO’s Experiment on habitable structures on the lunar soil will not only help astronauts to stay safely on the moon but also to move toward more futuristic development.
