Two years ago there were strong rumors about a Samsung Galaxy S7 Mini but in the end, this compact model was never introduced. Last year there was a lot of speculation about a Mini version of the Galaxy S8 but also this model has never seen the light of day. Last winter, the first rumors came in about a Galaxy S9 Mini, but this model was not presented during the Unpacked event in February. New rumors from China combined with a benchmark tell that there is still hope for lovers of compact smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy S9 Mini

The Chinese good MMDDJ, who more often shares reliable information about Samsung smartphones, confirmed at the end of last week that the Samsung Galaxy S9 Mini is coming. The device is currently being tested in China and is wearing the model number SM-G8750. Coincidentally, this model number has surfaced yesterday in the database of a benchmarking website. The entry in the Geekbench database gives us more information about the specifications of this device. The benchmark shows that the smartphone runs on Android 8.0 Oreo and is equipped with the Snapdragon 660 chipset which is supported by 4GB of RAM. The Snapdragon 660 chipset was introduced last year and consists of an octa-core processor with four powerful cores at 2.2 GHz and four efficient cores at 1.84 GHz.

Performance

In the benchmark, the possible Galaxy S9 Mini scores 5955 points in the multi-core and 1619 in the single-core. With these scores, the performance is in line with, for example, the Nokia 7 Plus and the iPhone 7. The recent Galaxy S9 with the Snapdragon 845 scores about 8300 in the multi-core while the Galaxy A8 + (2018) achieves a score of about 4200. With the combination of the Snapdragon 660 and 4GB RAM, the performance of the potential Galaxy S9 Mini would be exactly in the middle of the Galaxy devices that have been put on the market in 2018.

The “Mini” versions of the Samsung flagship models were similar to what Sony still does with the Compact smartphones. Not only are the devices smaller but also in the field of hardware it is just a bit less good. We see this for the SM-G8750 back in the used chipset which makes it in the mid-range category. Probably this also applies to other components such as the battery. Earlier reports tell that the Galaxy S9 Mini gets a display smaller than 5 inches with curved edges. If Samsung sticks to an 18: 5 aspect ratio then it could be a real mini device.

Whether it actually concerns the Samsung Galaxy S9 Mini will have to be revealed. The model number SM-G8750 is just like the Galaxy S5 Mini in the SM-G8xx series and at the moment the model number is not linked to any other Samsung smartphone. However, it is possible that it is not the S9 Mini but another unannounced smartphone from the South Korean company, for example, the Galaxy S9 Active. This scenario played itself rather with the SM-G888N0 as being the Galaxy X. It is possible that we will learn more in the coming months.
