Today, Ola officially announced the “Mission: Electric” that will involve the company introducing 10,000 E-rickshaws and Electric auto-rickshaws in the next 12 months. In India, cycle rickshaws, ‘shuttles’, and three-wheelers have become dominant in daily transportation. Ola trusts electrification to improve the outcome of its business model for both the drivers and the customers.

The company has undertaken the “Mission: Electric” to reach the mark of one million Electric Vehicles on the road by 2021. Ola will design the model after having a detailed conversation with driver-partners, cities, vehicle manufacturers, and battery companies. As of now, Ola leads the app-based hailing market. So their decision to introduce cleaner, comfortable, and safer products is quite remarkable and can have positive effects.

Shri Devendra Fadnavis, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra, and Shri Nitin Gadkari, Hon’ble Union Minister of Road Transport, Highways & Shipping, inaugurated Ola’s first electric vehicle project, covering electric cabs, electric auto rickshaws, electric buses, rooftop solar installations, charging stations and battery swapping experiments, at Nagpur on 26th May 2017, in the presence of key dignitaries and thousands of citizens. Ola has successfully extracted important information on the effective management of vehicles, batteries, and operations from this project.

Three wheelers are a vital means of transportation and a source of livelihood for millions of people every day. It also represents an immediate opportunity to improve outcomes for all stakeholders while reducing pollution across towns and cities. Less than a year ago, we launched India’s first multi-modal electric pilot in Nagpur. After more than 4 million electric kilometers traveled and many lessons learned, we are significantly expanding our commitment to electrify mobility in India. Ola leads by example, and we look forward to working with state governments and other partners to introduce accessible, affordable, and sustainable mobility solutions at scale.

– Bhavish Aggarwal, Co-Founder and CEO of Ola

The company is still looking forward to working on possible methods of optimizing batteries and charging. Ola is already in talks with several state governments. They want to create an appropriate policy environment for the deployment of electric three-wheelers. Global OEM partners and EV innovators are also being talked to in order to execute the project in a planned and phased manner. If everything goes according to plan, Ola will become one of the largest EV fleet operators in the world.
