Intel is all set to break its world record title for having flown the most number of drones simultaneously set earlier this year by flying 1,218 Intel® Shooting Star™ drones by attempting to fly 1,500 drones to celebrate the company’s 50th anniversary this summer. The live, one-time public show shall be held at an Intel site for employees and their families.

Intel has been advancing technology for 50 years. To celebrate that fact and showcase our ongoing innovation, we’re looking to break another drone light show record with our Intel Shooting Star drones and related technology.

– Anil Nanduri, Vice President and General Manager, Intel Drone team

Intel’s Shooting Star drones are unmanned aerial vehicles built for entertainment purposes and are equipped with LED lights to create innumerable color combinations and be programmed to show any animation. An entire fleet of Shooting Star drones can be controlled by a single pilot.

Apart from entertainment, the technology used in these drones can be applied to other uses. As an example, Intel cites two situations; the search and rescue mission for lost hikers and the inspection of commercial infrastructure; both of which can use the LED-equipped drones to speed up and make the process more efficient.

Working on the technology, Intel tried to push their boundaries, hoping to materialize the idea of flying lights indoors in stadiums, theatres, and places that do not allow positioning via GPS signals; which made them come up with a number of new capabilities to fly a fleet of drones indoors.

Intel is innovating every day in an attempt to commercialize drone technology for business and entertainment purposes. As stated in Intel’s newsroom, “Intel will announce the latest on its commercial drone innovations at AUVSI Xponential on May 1. Witness the latest in Intel drone technology and learn about the newest features and capabilities of both Intel’s drone hardware and software solutions at booth #628 and in the Outdoor Unmanned Xperience.”
