PlayStation’s popular series God of War has set a milestone this week by clinching the title of being the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive. This feat is credited only to the massive fans of the game who are crazy for it, and it is due to them that the publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment could achieve an impressive global God of War sales volume of the franchise revival with more than 3.1 million units being sold worldwide in the very first three days of its release (April 20–22). Sony unveiled God of War on April 20.

Shannon Studstill, studio head at God of War developer Sony Santa Monica, gave his statement on the PlayStation Blog:

I would like to personally thank the millions of fans around the world who decided to embark on Kratos’ latest adventure with us. Your support is truly inspiring, and it’s a reason why we push ourselves every day to go beyond the boundaries of play. I’d also like to thank our Creative Director, Cory Barlog, and Director of Product Development, Yumi Yang and our entire amazing team at Santa Monica Studio. The belief in the game’s vision and the passion for storytelling across the team is undeniable. We look forward to hearing more about how fans are creating new memories of their favorite God of War gameplay moments that will be remembered for a long time. – Shannon Studstill, studio head, God of War developer, Sony Santa Monica

God of War is a winner on both sides of the spectrum, lapping up critical acclaim as well as commercial success. God of War sales at the opening numbers is even more striking in the context of its commercial performance as against Sony’s other PS4 exclusives.

It has left behind Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, a May 2016 release, which was the former record-holder for the fastest-selling first-party exclusive (in North America). Set in competitive perspective, God of War’s initial sales figures have outshined Nathan Drake’s last excursion, amounting to sales of 2.7 million units worldwide, but only in the first seven days of its release. Back in 2017, Horizon Zero Dawn was the champion performer in the history of Guerilla Games, making the biggest debut, selling more than 2.6 million copies spanning its first two weeks of release.

But 2018 gave all the PlayStation fans the amazing God of War. Fans all over responded very positively to the game when it was released about two years ago, lauding the bold reconstruction and reimagining of the popular franchise with the new thrill of the father-son dynamic between Kratos and Atreus. And the present-day scenario adds to the success story of the exciting game. It has now become the first new entry in the long-running franchise since 2013’s God of War: Ascension, as Kratos is brought out of ancient Greece to an altogether new setting with its distinct mythological background of the Scandinavian and the Norse Gods, along with bringing his son who joins him on his journey.

Thanks to the creative and immensely talented team of Santa Monica Studio, this game is exactly what the God of War series fans were waiting for.
