Realme is a new brand taking up the Indian smartphone market, which is powered by China’s OPPO Mobiles. The Chinese company unveiled the first invention in the series. Realme 1 was launched in India on Tuesday, the first smartphone in the new Oppo brand for the country. The Realme brand is intended for the Indian youth and meant for eCommerce channels, with Oppo naming Amazon India as its strategic partner for the launch of Realme 1, which will be exclusively available on the online marketplace.

The Realme 1 has been positioned by Oppo as a device that delivers on both prices and quality, endorsing that each phone goes through 18 quality tests for the motherboard, more than 100,000 drop tests, and multiple temperatures and humidity tests. These tests are typical across the industry, but OPPO highlights them as a possible differentiator.

The smartphone’s design is similar to the ‘glossy diamond-cut design’ seen in the recent contributions from Oppo, such as the Oppo F7, though the company has foregone the iPhone X-style display notch seen on these two offerings.

The phone features a 6.0-inch FHD+ 18:9 display and is powered by MediaTek’s Helio P60 chipset with four 2.0GHz Cortex A73 cores paired with four Cortex A53 cores. Other specs of the Realme 1 consist of a 13MP rear camera, 8MP front shooter, and a 3400mAh battery.

The Realme brand, placed as a “premium mid-range smartphone brand,” will comprise smartphones within the price range of Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 20,000. However, the company said that more premium models could be expected in the future. The smartphone is a ‘Made in India’ product.

The Realme 1 will be initially available in two storage configurations: a base model with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage for Rs 8,990 ($135), and a version with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage for Rs 13,990 ($205). With other major specs, Realme missed out on the fingerprint sensor feature.

The smartphone’s first sale will be held at 12 pm IST on May 25 on Amazon India, with only the Realme 1, 6GB RAM/ 128GB storage variant made available in this sale. The company says the 3GB RAM/ 32GB storage and 4GB RAM/ 64GB storage variants will come to India a month later.
