Tesla Model X has set the world record of towing a Qantas Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. It was a part of a publicity stunt by Qantas at a remote taxiway in Melbourne Airport.

The towing capacity of the Tesla Model X is calculated as 5,000 lb which makes it a passenger electric vehicle with the highest towing capacity in the current market. But there are instances where it exceeded this capacity by pulling trucks and rail cars.

A Model X driver helped a truck by pulling it out of snow in Raleigh, North Carolina last March. The towing stunt was recorded. Similarly, Bjorn Nyland, a Norwegian Model X owner performed several towing stunts, one of which includes pulling a 95,000-lb semi truck in the snow. Even, The Boring Company of Elon Musk used a Model X to pull rail cars weighing 250,000 lbs out of tunnels.

The explanation behind the seemingly impossible stunts is that once the Model X can effectively implement the torque and traction, all it needs is to get it moving and maintain the momentum. Additionally, the car possesses 9,500 Nm of wheel torque that makes the stunts quite possible rather than unbelievable.

This publicity stunt of Qantas was to promote its partnership with Tesla. Tesla owners are also being rewarded by them. Among other rewards is the Qantas’ Future Planet Program for the Tesla owners who are also members of Frequent Flyer. They get to enjoy mileage offset for their vehicles and on the air for the entire month of June.

For the second reward, Qantas is providing charging solutions to the Model X and Model S owners at its valet facilities in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, and Brisbane, with Tesla High Power Wall Connectors. The third and last reward for Tesla owners is Qantas’ cooperation in terms of innovation aiming to achieve holistically sustainable goals.

The partnership between Qantas and Tesla is powerful enough for people to see a future full of innovations in the transportation industry.
