Today, June 6, at Computex 2018, Microsoft announced a new version of Windows 10 IoT Core, named the IoT Core Services. Whereas IoT Core offers a free Semi-Annual channel, the Core Services will be a Long-Term Servicing Channel offering packing various services and will be a paid provision.

This provision includes devices using the new services which will receive 10 years of support but won’t get feature updates, enabling them to prioritize stability. The company said that there will be a new LTSB offering every two to three years. Each of these offerings will bring 10 years of support.

It further features a new Device Update Center for creating and controlling device updates. The same Windows Update content delivery network will carry out the distribution, which will bring the option to flight for testing devices.

There’s also a DHA or Device Health Attestation that levels up security. It helps evaluate device security and recommends solutions when combined with Azure IoT Device Management.

On the whole, a device built on Windows 10 IoT Core can be commercialized. This will be complemented with enterprise-grade support and security that’s synonymous with Windows.

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced partnering with NXP for supporting Windows 10 IoT Core on NXP’s processors i.MX 6 and i.MX 7. The entire offering of Windows 10 IoT Core Services is based on this collaboration, along with Microsoft’s provisions of 10 years of support for both Win10 IoT Core and IoT Enterprise.

Microsoft invites users to enroll for the limited preview by emailing iotservices@microsoft.com. A broader availability will come in July, and the general release will come later within the year.
