Today, we are proud to announce the launch of the 2018 DNI Fund Report. – Ludovic Blecher, Head of the DNI Fund
The Digital News Innovation Fund has supported publishers in their work for almost 3 years, with a commitment of €150 million to take off a peak start and also nurture innovative projects within the European news ecosystem. To date, €94 million has been committed, with another round of future funding to come. “To date, we have received more than 4,800 applications, with 461 successful projects from 29 countries, for a total amount of €94m in funding.”- Ludovic Blecher.
The report showcases projects that make tackling four key industry challenges much easier.
- Battling misinformation: projects to defend and protect quality journalism by using fact-checking and other technologies.
- Telling local stories ensures that even the smaller and local publishers get a shout-out in the digital space.
- Exploring new technologies: to automate work streams or content via digital technology to support original journalism and improve the reader experience.
- Boosting digital revenues: helping publishers with better opportunities to turn their content into revenue.
This year Google took a collaborative approach with publishers stretching across the national lines, sharing knowledge to create bespoke projects or using open source coding. The DNI-funded projects are funding opportunities from startups to large newsrooms, thus evolving and reinventing everything.
