Progressive developments in Artificial Intelligence technology, machine learning and robotics over all the years have redefined procedural techniques and work strategies in the workplace, therefore modifying the nature of work in the current job scenario to a considerable extent. The concept of an automated, thinking “virtual lab assistant” has already jumped onto the real plane from its conceptual realm. When augmented reality is incorporated in instruments of vital utility in any domain, say the domain of medical science or physics and so on, the initial utility provided by the structural and scientific construction of the given instrument is compounded manifold, and so one can deduce that the efficiency only increases manifold as a result.

One such case is put up by the Augmented Reality Microscope for Cancer Detection, which is the subject of a Google research paper this spring. To define it precisely, it is nothing but standard laboratory microscopes equipped with machine learning, impressing visual analysis on the image to spot and highlight areas of risk and other minute details that escape normal human eyesight.

This microscope is a prototype that showcases the immense potential of digital technologies in the future and impressive leaps in the treatment mechanisms in medical science as healthcare professionals can focus more on personalised care of the patients for aspects of treatment that require human tending, and increasingly leave the mechanical aspects, such as running tests, to the instruments integrated with digital technology. Optimum utilization of time for the treatment of the patient will come easy then for the professionals, which is a huge positive. More job opportunities may follow as the trucker of the future might spend more time managing logistics at transfer hubs for automated trucks than behind the wheel.

As of late, jobs are on the rise across Europe as Google is hiring many people for job profiles like Strategic Cloud Data Engineer, Android Relationship Lead, Big Data Product Specialist – positions which are offshoots of advancement in digital technology. Corroborating the branching out of versatile new job roles, the MIT Sloan Management Review published a report last year, identifying and enumerating entirely new job categories that AI will create such as trainers, explainers, and sustainers. Cognitive machine learning and humans will work hand in hand in these job categories to ensure efficient and responsible use of the machines to their respective ends.

Google’s role in shaping the nature of work in future

Digital technology has an entire wealth of potential to be identified, scooped out and put to use in the job market, but any mammoth change is subject to difficulties and unforeseen lapses, besides having to win over the test of time. Therefore, Google is engaging in training and other forward-looking solutions already to correspond to changes in the labor market. And since the labor market is mainly composed of human labor, the key lies in training of workers from different ages, backgrounds, experience levels, skills and competencies to help them learn the new skills required for a world of digitized nature of work. And the demand for high-end digital training for the workers is scaling up every day.

To this end, the Grow with Google program aims to meet this expanding demand through training workshops, online courses, direct monitoring and so on. Some visible results of this are that the graduates are now equipped with important digital skills to move up to better jobs, expand their businesses online and so on. Consequently, as much as more than 50 million businesses have recorded growth in revenue and customer scale and 3 million people have already been trained across Europe to date. The training drive aims at helping 1 million Europeans to find a job or grow their business by 2020, which is commendable.

Moreover, Google has collaborated with Udacity and Bertelsmann to offer 10,000 scholarships in web development at both beginner and advanced levels and after being pleased with the demand for web development training, have extended the target of the drive to an additional 60,000 scholarships to accumulate fresh web developers from myriad backgrounds. For this, Google is partnering with national agencies such as the Swedish Employment Agency to ensure the greater reach of these programs.

The Swedish Employment Agency along with Google enables unemployed people to learn digital skills with the Digital Me portal. Training providers have been brought on board by Google to expand the training curriculum for Grow with Google bringing in more essential soft skills such as leadership, entrepreneurship, creativity that are important worker assets in the dynamic labor market.

Google and OECD in this together!

The statement underlining the vision of the new world of work by the team of Google goes: ‘We believe that the new world of work should be inclusive and accessible, and benefit society. And we want to play our role. That’s why we’re proud to join an initiative launched by the OECD in May to gather insight into how the evolving labor market can benefit everyone.’

After consulting with the business and academic representatives on the wide benefits of the evolving labor market, the starting point of the journey up ahead was set as training from the trusted digital leaders. The recent Nordic conference on the future of work resulted in the idea of pinning “digital frontrunner” countries as the matrix for future technological transition, as suggested by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and OECD, while also sizing up other shared suggestions and insights for the evolving labor markets such as a ‘Future of Work Observatory’ identifying the champion workers and companies etc.

The mission set ahead requires concentrated, concerted and sustained effort but the huge Return on Investments (ROI) anticipated after hitting the bull’s eye is what makes the target worthwhile and should be the perfect motivator for big companies, governments, and the workforce in Europe and the world at large to positively orient themselves for the future world of new jobs, skills and technologies.

The trajectory of development of humans work right from the stone ages has constantly seen progressive changes with the evolution of human society, and now, what with the power of digital technology, the future is set for a ‘re-evolution’ of work!
