Microsoft has launched the latest version of Skype for desktop, Skype 8.0, which will replace the previous Skype Classic 7.0 starting September 1.

There are quite a handful of features in Skype 8.0 that aim to build on the conveniences for the users. Perhaps the most exciting one is that of the group calls, each of which can involve more than 24 users in one instance.

As per the blog posted yesterday, July 16 by the Skype team, the new version will also have free HD video calls.

An excerpt from the blog says: “We built Skype version 8.0 based on feedback from our community, adding exciting new features while ensuring it is simple to use with the same familiar interface of Skype version 7.0.”

Among other features, Skype 8.0 has message reactions, a chat media gallery, and @mentions for sending individual notifications in group chats. Additionally, it comes with a sharing option of up to 300 MB of images and videos.

The new Skype will later have read-receipts, text messages with hidden notifications, and end-to-end encrypted audio calls. There will as well be features such as cloud-based video recordings, profile invites, and more.

Skype 7.0 will presently continue to as it is but till September 1. Its evolved version for iPad users will receive features like personalized themes, quoted messages, and of course the @mentions, along with other features.

Skype has about 300 million users, but the number is not growing for a while now because of other video calling services. FaceTime of Apple, WhatsApp’s own video calling, and loads more are now available for the users worldwide. Microsoft’s answer to regain its glory in the current race is coming up with advanced features that shape up the Skype 8.0.
