Samsung has yet another innovative idea, they have patented a technology that makes it possible to determine your skin type and give recommendations based on that.
Samsung app to determine skin type
Many people sometimes have skin problems, so your skin can be too dry or too fat. Or there may be too much or too little pigment. And with the hot summer this year, it is also needed to be extra careful with the burning of your skin. A solution to these problems starts with determining your skin type because then you can only choose the care that suits you best. Samsung seems to be able to develop an app that makes it possible to determine your skin type.
Samsung Electronics has filed a patent with the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) for an electronic device and method for providing information related to skin type or object’. The patent was published on July 19, 2018.
The camera of your smartphone is used to determine your skin type. The user must take a picture of his finger, hand or eye. This way a piece of skin is captured and a part that does not consist of skin, such as your nail or eye-white. Then the color ratio is determined, after which the smartphone can determine to what extent the skin is tanned.
If you have a different nail or discoloration of your eye-white, this is automatically taken into account. In addition, the app is able to detect a wound, hyperpigmentation (too much pigment) or hypopigmentation (reduction of the pigment). A total of six different skin types can be identified.
Smartphone recommendations based on your skin type
The mobile device is then able to give recommendations based on the determined skin type. This takes into account the current time, the current weather and your location. For example, the smartphone can give advice on which factor of sunscreen you can use best and how long you can stay in the sun without burning.
The device can also advise you, for example, to look for shade or wear a cap or sunglasses against the sun. All data is stored so that you can easily see how much you have been exposed to UV radiation during the day. In addition, automatic notifications can be sent when, for example, you have been in contact with the sun for too long.
If your skin is so exposed to the sun that the risk of skin cancer is high, this can also be observed by your smartphone. This will then advise you to stay inside for at least 10 days.
In addition, the Samsung patent speaks about the difference between the skin of an adult and the skin of a child. There will also be an option to indicate that the person is 10 years or older so that this can be taken into account in the calculation and recommendations.
The patented technology can not only be used in combination with a smartphone but can also work in combination with a TV, tablet, camera, laptop or wearable.
As always with patents, the question remains whether we will ever see it in an end product again. Yet technology like this seems to be relatively easy to implement. Finally, there are already several skin apps. However, these often focus on selling related products. Samsung takes a different approach, by giving users useful feedback, based on the situation they are currently in.
