WiLan, the Canadian patent licensing company has been awarded $145.1 million by a Californian federal jury against Apple yesterday, August 1.

As per the San Diego jury, some models of the iPhones have infringed two patents of WiLan that are related to wireless communications technology. This was as well a statement given by WiLan that’s owned by Quarterhill Inc.

In a trial verdict rendered on August 1, 2018 in the United States District Court for the Southern District of California a jury awarded WiLAN $145.1 million in damages against Apple Inc. for infringement of WiLAN’s US patent Nos 8,457,145 and 8,537,757. –  court filing

Now, Apple has confirmed that it is preparing to appeal. It has rejected infringement claims earlier in the pre-trial filings. No other details were revealed as of this reporting. But it is good to see the tech giant up so fast in countering.

This is the second time WiLan and Apple are going head-to-head in court. Back in 2013, WiLan asked for $248 million in damages from Apple in another litigation. But an American jury ruled in favor of the latter during that time.

How are things going to end this time? We have to wait until Apple does an appeal.

As revealed, the patents in question are: “method and apparatus for bandwidth request protocols in a wireless communication system,” and “adaptive call admission control for use in a wireless communication system.”

Ottawa-based WiLan started off by producing broadband wireless technologies after its foundation in 1992. It was as well built and an extensive patent portfolio, and claims to be “one of the most successful patent companies in the world.”

That’s not good enough to scare off Apple. Stay tuned to get hold of the development.
