Canon today announced the Canon EOS R, its first full-frame mirrorless camera. The Canon EOS R is the “just the first model in the system” and “won’t be the last,” being a part the advanced Canon R System, according to Kazuto Ogawa, Canon President, and Chief Operating Officer.

The Canon EOS R includes a 30.3-megapixel CMOS sensor capable of up to 8 frames per second (FPS) in Single AF mode and 5 FPS when shooting with Servo AF mode. Canon’s DIGIC 8 processor helps propel its image processing and Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus system with 5,655 AF points. With a maximum shutter speed range from 1/8000th to 30 seconds, the Canon EOS R also comprises an ISO range is 100-40,000 with extended ISO options of 50, 51,200, and 102,400. It also featured Bulb mode.

Canon EOS RThe Canon EOS R moreover presents 4K/30p video at a bitrate of 480Mbps, 1080/60p video with a bitrate of 180Mbps, and 720/120p video with a bitrate of 160Mbps; a 1.7x crop factor when shooting video; 4:2:0 8-bit internal recording; and 4:2:2 10-bit external recording via HDMI. Furthermore, Canon LOG comes pre-installed.

The electronic viewfinder (EVF) of Canon EOS R covers a half-inch 3.69-million dot OLED viewfinder with a 23mm eyepoint which provides clear views and reduces strain during long hours of shooting. The rear of the camera includes a 3.15-inch Vari-angle touchscreen LCD display through which one can navigate the menu, compose shots in Live View, and even autofocus via touch.

Additionally, the new model comprises a single SD card slot for storage.

Canon Full-frame CameraBesides the impressive camera, the EOS R’s brand new RF lens mount gains the spotlight. During the presentation, Canon emphasized the 54mm diameter lens mount that uses a 12-pin connection for data transmission. It’s compatible with the Canon EF and EF-S lenses with the help of one of the four new EF-EOS R Mount Adapters. This also signifies that a new line of lenses has been developed for the new full-frame mirror-less system.

Canon has added four new lenses for the EOS R system: the RF 24-105mm F/4 L IS, RF 50mm F/1.2 L, RF 28-70mm F/2 L, and RF 35mm F1.8 Macro IS STM, where all four RF lenses have a new customizable “control ring” that can control (physically) elements like ISO, aperture, exposure compensation, and more.

The Canon EOS R camera can be available for sale starting October 2018 for an MSRP of $2,299 (body-only) and for $3,399 as a kit, including the RF 24-105mm F/4 L IS lens.
