Ride Pass is an Uber attempt like Amazon Prime-style subscription service. A new plan to lock customers into its transportation ecosystem while also expanding the list of services it offers ahead of an expected public offering in 2019.

Uber is taking a different approach with its subscription offering, offering reusable discounts rather than a preset bucket of rides. It’ll be interesting to see which approach proves more popular. Uber has launched a discount subscription service that rolls out today in five cities: Austin, Los Angeles, Denver, Orlando, and Miami.

It costs $14.99 per month, except in Los Angeles, where the cost is $24.99 per month. Riders in the previously-mentioned cities can sign up for Ride Pass through the Uber app. Subscriptions auto-renew but can be canceled anytime, according to Uber.

As the service commands $14.99 per month it locks in a flat rate on all UberX and UberPool trips taken during a given month. Rates will be based on historical data and won’t be affected by things like surge pricing, traffic or weather.

Lyft launched an all-access subscription plan earlier this month that offers 30 rides for a flat rate of $299 a month. In addition to ride-hailing, Los Angeles residents get access to Uber’s Jump bicycles and scooters for free, which might explain why Angelenos have to pay more for their subscriptions. Lyft doesn’t include bike or scooter rides with subscriptions in any city.

Well, customers in participating cities can sign up for Ride Pass through the Uber app where they’ll also be able to track monthly savings. However, it is prominent that alike Lyft, Uber is likely obliged to come up with a similar service.
