SmugMug, during its acquisition of Flickr, the world’s largest photographer-centric community, this April, had made a commitment to revitalize the app. And after a month of efforts made in the direction on the basis of suggestions made by Flickr members, the company is following up on its promise by announcing a number of new updates that are coming to both Free and Pro Flickr accounts.

To begin with, users shall not require a Yahoo! account to access Flickr from January 2019; thus fulfilling the members’ long-standing desire for a simpler login process.

So far as Flickr Pro is concerned, users can now enjoy ad-free browsing and unlimited storage, among a horde of other new benefits. Pro users shall be provided with advanced stats on trending photos; along with photos that have performed the best over the life of a user’s Flickr Pro account. The Flickr mobile app is all set to give Pro users all the stats they know and love in the app itself.

Flickr Pro users have also been entitled to assistance from its new world-class support team. Apart from this, the latest feature including 5K photo size optimizes images for any screen, from smartphone to jumbotron. The update also includes increased video playback, increasing the time of video playback from three minutes to ten minutes (coming in early 2019). Users shall also receive more partner discounts including Adobe Creative Cloud, custom portfolio sites on SmugMug, gear from Peak Design and many more.

Pro accounts will still receive unlimited storage, whereas free accounts will be limited to 1,000 photos and/or videos. Flickr Pro is available for $49.99 per year; and users who shall upgrade to Pro before November 30, shall be entitled to get 30 percent off the first year.

From the start, Flickr has been an act of co-creation, and without you, our community, we’d be just an empty picture frame – no more than a template and a web address. We need the community’s help to make Flickr a sustainable, thriving community again. We are committed to building the future we all want for Flickr – one where the site can keep evolving in all the areas that have made it the incredible, diverse, and beautiful place it has always been. We’re excited to define the future of photography together, – Flickr CEO and chief geek Don MacAskill.

As for the Free accounts, Flickr intends to make them more transparent by limiting the photo storage capability to “member’s 1,000 best photos or videos, regardless of size,” since, “‘free’ services are seldom actually free for users. Users pay with their data or with their time. We would rather the arrangement be transparent.” The users have until Tuesday, January 8, 2019, to upgrade to Pro or download photos over the 1,000 limit.
