The so longed rumors and leaks have finally come true. Nearly two years after its release, the Nintendo Switch finally gained access to YouTube on Thursday. After a listing was spotted on Nintendo’s website showing a YouTube app for the Switch last week, Google on Thursday released the app for the portable gaming console.
Nintendo Switch is a little more of a multi-purpose device today, with the addition of a YouTube app. The app is exactly what it is expected to be, offering access to the platform’s endless selection of numerous videos. And YouTube makes sure that the Switch version fully supports 360 videos. To control YouTube one needs the Switch’s left joystick and main buttons and the touchscreen partially works in handheld mode, which will make searching for videos and tapping into them a lot easier.
You can now download the YouTube app through the Nintendo E-shop for free, and notably, you don’t need Nintendo’s online subscription service to use it. As with other Switch apps and games, users can use the YouTube app on the Switch’s portable display or on a larger television screen when the console is placed in its dock.
Using the app also does not require a subscription to Nintendo Switch Online, the company’s online gaming subscription service that is $3.99 for one month, $7.99 for three months or $19.99 for a year.
Adding YouTube is just the second notable video platform for the Switch, following Hulu which arrived on the platform last November.
