LG has joined hands with Infineon Technologies AG to introduce cutting-edge Time-of-Flight technology to the selfie camera of the upcoming LG G8 ThinQ, which is all set to be unveiled at MWC 2019, scheduled to be held in Barcelona.

Infineon’s REAL3TM image sensor chip combines the algorithms of Infineon and pmdtechnologies created for processed 3D-point clouds, which are data points produced post-3D scanning, to bring next-level imaging to smartphone front cameras.

In addition to the complex algorithms used by 3D technologies to measure an object’s distance from the lens, the time-of-flight technology also captures infra-red rays bouncing off the surface of the object in question, making it faster and more than capable in ambient light. This, in turn, helps the technology to relieve the application processor of some of its pressures and reduce power consumption altogether. Its fast response speed makes ToF highly applicable in biometric authentication methods like face recognition, and since it ‘sees’ objects in 3D and not by using surrounding light, it maintains its efficiency both indoors and out. This makes ToF an ideal technology for AR and VR applications.

Infineon is poised to revolutionize the market. We have demonstrated service beyond the mere product level – specifically catering to phone OEMs, associated reference design houses and camera module manufacturers. Within five years, we expect 3D cameras to be found in most smartphones, and Infineon will contribute a significant share – Andreas Urschitz, Division president of Infineon’s Power Management & Multimarket division

Coming to Infineon, not only is the German company recognized as a frontrunner in the field of manufacturing power semiconductors, but it also provides technologically excellent sensor solutions, highly reliable automotive, power management, and digital security applications. The company’s top technology, which shall be featured in LG G8 ThinQ, is fit for use in both premium high-end smartphones and mid-end devices.

Keeping in mind LG’s goal to provide real value to its mobile customers, our newest flagship was designed with ToF technology from inception to give users a unique and secure verification system without sacrificing camera capabilities. The LG G8 ThinQ featuring ToF will be the optimal choice for users in search of a premium smartphone that offers unmatched camera capabilities – Chang Ma, Senior vice president and head of Product Strategy at LG Mobile Communications Company
