Samsung folding phone with a locking mechanismSamsung Display has filed a patent on 21 September 2018 with the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) for a 'Foldable display apparatus'. The patent was published on January 24, 2019. The device does not have a huge elongated screen, it is a fairly compact phone. The housing consists of two parts, which are held together by means of a hinge. When you fold or unfold the smartphone, the two housing parts will move relative to each other exactly on the fold line. This makes it possible to flatten the phone on the fold. If the smartphone is completely unfolded, the two parts will close seamlessly. At the rear, a small slide is placed (indicated in the diagram above with 'A'), which functions as a lock. This way you can easily put the phone in a certain position, after which it remains in the locked position. This foldable Samsung phone can never be folded unintentionally. The patent description does not clarify how many cameras this folding phone will have. It is a unique design that we have not seen before. Normally the display is placed on the inside of a clamshell model, which makes the screen better protected against external influences. In this case, Samsung has placed the display on the outside, creating new application areas. The device is also particularly compact in the folded position. In addition, you can easily place the foldable phone without having to jump back to the folded position. Whether and when this foldable Samsung phone is released is as yet unknown. There are at least two folding phones from the Korean manufacturer expected this year, Bloomberg knew earlier this week to report. It is a clamshell model and a variant similar to the Huawei Mate X.
