Google has released the first beta of its latest Android Q operating system. The company has detailed some of the most significant features that are brought along with the new OS. Google, in its blog post, emphasizes a lot how Android Q has been designed and built on top of privacy protections that are already available in the Android OS.

Google is revamping user privacy by limiting location access by apps in Android Q. Earlier you could either enable or disable the access by an app. Now, there’s a third option that lets the app see your location only when it is activated.

Android Q Beta 1 primarily focuses on revamping user privacy, safety and security, which includes more control over location data. Google, has its own location-related issues to deal with, and having a more firm grip over location data on Android might be an excellent way to start.

It used to be that apps had all-or-nothing access to your location. If approved, they’d be able to access it even when the app was not in use. Google is now rectifying this with a new option that will let you set location privileges only when an app is in the foreground. Google notes that some apps will still be able to access your location after you hit the home button or turn off the display.

Previously users had only single control but starting with Android Q now, users have their own access to an app that asks for location data that has to be granted for proper functioning. They will be provided with three options to share their location data – when the app is running, all the time – even when it is running in the background and never. The permission setting can also be changed via setting according to the convenience of the user.
