The human being can not look to the future, but for some time now Volkswagen has been quite sure that it is electric cars that will soon shape the streetscape. Therefore, the Group is working intensively on a change in its model range. The first car from this new series with the name ID can now be pre-ordered by customers since this Wednesday – for 1000 Euro down payment they secure a car from the first to 30,000 pieces limited edition of the serial model ID.3.

The buyers need a bit of basic confidence in this electrical future, however, because they can now pay the car, but not yet look at: Only in September, VW will officially present its future car, as part of the IAA Motor Show in Frankfurt. At the start of the “Pre-Bookings” presented on Wednesday in Berlin, only a stunned with a camouflaged model in a huge glass case was seen. This looks a bit like an LSD trip – but is Wolfsburg’s vision for the mobility of the future.

The vehicles of the first edition should have a range of 420 kilometers and cost less than 40,000 euros. After the limited first edition, the ID.3 will be available with three different battery sizes: In addition to the medium version, which promises 420 kilometers range, there is also a small version that creates 330 and a large, the 550 kilometers track per load. The price of the entry-level model should be less than 30,000 euros.

Other details, such as engine performance, the weight of the battery or features, will remain locked until the September presentation. Nevertheless, VW sales director Jürgen Stackmann expects that the pre-orderable 30,000 pieces will be awarded even before the official presentation: One finally offers cars that are “breathtakingly sexy,” said Stackmann.

The offer, which makes VW, is, in any case, a challenge to the competition – especially to the eCar specialists Tesla, which aims with its Model 3 in a similar price range also on the mass market. The production of the ID.3 is scheduled to begin at the VW plant in Zwickau, Saxony, at the end of the year, with the delivery of the first cars planned for mid-2020. For buyers of the first edition, electricity is up to 2000 kilowatt hours in the first year for free.
