DJI’s RoboMaster S1; a camera-equipped remote-control educational tank unveiled

Author at TechGenyz Tech
DJI Robomaster S1

DJI is known for its drones, but its newest device is a little more grounded. The RoboMaster S1 is a remote control, camera-equipped tank-like rover packed a flexible movement option, a dextrous gimbal with a variety of sensors, and a blaster that shoots gel beads.

Core to the S1 is its Mecanum wheels, a design that allows a robot to move in any direction, including moving side to side. But unlike DJI’s drones, the S1 can shoot projectiles in the form of little gel bead bullets. These beads come in super small form but puff up once submerged in water for a few hours; they’re nontoxic, but will require some cleanup after use.

It can also be controlled via mobile app, which taps into the S1’s camera and allows you to do anything from play battle and racing games (more on this in a bit), to programming the robot to perform a variety of tasks. The robot features some of the machine learning tech DJI’s developed through its drone research and can follow and recognize different visual markers, follow a person, recognize gestures, follow paths drawn on the ground, etc.

RoboMaster S1 is an educational robot designed to help people learn by doing. On top of the learning aspect, this robot was also built to fight, with omnidirectional movement, target shooting, and an FPV driving experience, users can battle against each other like they would at the actual competition in Shenzhen. Advanced coders can get in and program the S1, but the main application is to educate people who are just starting. With a series of projects ranging from beginner to expert levels, Robo Academy offers video courses and guides that can teach people at any level.
