Shashi Tharoor files claims on TikTok for sending users data to China

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has recently expressed concern about the TikTok app and made big security issue claims about it. The Congress leader claimed that the TikTok app is collecting data illegally, which is getting to China. Tharoor said this is an issue of national security. MP Shashi Tharoor was speaking in the Lok Sabha during Zero Hour when he said this.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Tharoor said that he wants to draw attention to data leaks and surveillance due to the absence of comprehensive data security frame over. The Congress MP said that in the era of smartphones, applications, social media, and the Internet, much data is coming out from India, and its advantage can be taken to earn profits and to get political control.

He said that recently, federal regulators in the US had imposed a fine of $ 5.7 million on social media app TikTok for collecting illegal data for children. The Congress leader further said that the Chinese government receives data from TikTok through China-controlled fully-owned China Telecom.

Describing this as a national security issue, Shashi Tharoor said that he would urge the government to protect the fundamental right of privacy and to save the country's democracy, the government should formulate a comprehensive legal framework in this regard.

It is worth noting that a few months back, India did ban the TikTok app and it was also removed from Google Play Store and Apple App Store. There were accusations of promoting objectionable and vulgar videos of children on the app. During the hearing of a case, the Madras High Court had instructed the central government to ban a channel in China's Popular Video app TikTok and said that the app is promoting 'obscenity'.
