Samsung has patented numerous futuristic and innovative smartphone models. Starting with the foldable phone to a double-sided, bendable and even a roll-up phone. One has a clamshell design, the other folds into a tablet. With one folding phone, the flexible display is mounted on the outside, with yet another design the screen is protected on the inside of the housing – such as the Galaxy Fold.

Unique Extendable Samsung Phone

Samsung Display, the display division of Samsung, applied for a design patent in August 2018 at the KIPO (Korean Intellectual Property Office). The patent was approved in March 2019, after which the special smartphone design was actually published on 11 June 2019.

There are 10 patent sketches included. The bottom of the device is completely round. This not only gives the mobile phone a unique appearance, but it also provides additional functionality. The smartphone can be expanded like a RAL range. You know them, such a color range from the paint industry.

The Samsung smartphone has three equal display parts, which are stored underneath each other. Outside the main screen, you can unfold the phone in such a way that you have another two equal display parts at your disposal.

For this, a metal bar is fitted at the bottom, in the middle of the device, which holds the three parts together. The user can move these parts left or right independently of each other, leaving you with a range of screens. It is a very special design, the housing also seems to be remarkably thin.

The practical utility of this invention remains unclear to me. Nevertheless, it is, of course, a very unique device to see. It will undoubtedly be meant to be able to run multiple applications side by side, possibly also offering added value for gaming applications.

Since the patent was applied for by Samsung Display, no conclusions can be drawn regarding the further design. For example, no buttons or cameras are visible except the receiver. The back is completely smooth.

Should Samsung Electronics actually intend to further develop this design – which I do not think is likely – then the company will undoubtedly provide this unique 3-in-1 smartphone with the necessary components, such as a camera, fingerprint scanner, etc.

We have never come across a design like this before. LetsGoDigital did report last month about a Google foldable smartphone, this was also a device with multiple screens. However, this device can be opened like a book and consists of multiple ‘pages’ or flexible displays.
