Sony has announced a new smartphone at IFA 2019. However, the device does not get the name Xperia 1 Compact as many people thought, it is the Sony Xperia 5. It is a powerful phone with a compact design. Just like the Xperia 1 and Xperia 10 smartphones launched earlier this year, the new model is also equipped with a CinemaWide 21:9 screen, ideal for watching movies or for playing games of course. To the delight of many PlayStation fans, Sony has also made the device compatible with the popular DualShock 4 controller.

Due to the 21:9 ratio, the phone is significantly narrower than a regular high-end device. The dimensions are 68 mm wide x 158 mm high. For comparison, the iPhone XS Max and the Galaxy S10 + are also about 158mm long, however, these devices are 9mm and 6mm wider, a difference of roughly 10%. This makes Sony’s smartphone also ideal for people with somewhat smaller hands.

The Xperia 5 is equipped with a 6.1-inch Full HD + OLED screen with HDR. In addition, Corning Gorilla Glass 6 is used, which improves the scratch resistance of the screen. Sony has opted for a symmetrical design, without indentation. Instead of a notch, a narrow bezel is used on both the top and bottom. There is an 8-megapixel front camera built-in with an f / 2.0 lens.

The elongated screen is perfect for playing a game, such as the popular game Fortnite. The latest Xperia smartphones can already be used in combination with PS4 Remote Play. This feature makes it possible to play games on your PlayStation via your Xperia. This time Sony has also made the DualShock 4 controller compatible with its latest phone. This makes it possible to control games on the Sony Xperia 5 with a real PlayStation controller.

Thanks to the stereo speakers and Dolby Atmos support, the device also delivers a rich audio sound, which benefits the overall gaming experience. There is also a ‘Game enhancement’ settings menu available, so you can turn off incoming calls and notifications while gaming. However, Sony’s newest mobile phone has to do without a 3.5mm headphone connection.

In addition to a single camera on the front, there are also three cameras built-in at the rear. The first camera has a 16mm lens (f / 2.4) with 5-axis SteadyShot stabilization, in addition there is a 26mm (f / 1.6) ultra-wide-angle lens with optical image stabilization and a 52mm (f / 2.4) portrait / telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom and 5x digital zoom built-in.

This Sony phone also has eye autofocus. By closely following the eyes it is better to focus on people. This smartphone goes one step further and can also make continuous burst shots of up to 10 fps AF / AE tracking. Thanks to improved AF / AE calculations of up to 30 fps, moving objects can also be clearly focused.

The 3D maker is also available. In addition, it is possible to record 4K HDR videos in a 21: 9 screen ratio.

Do you also have a Sony Alpha SLR camera? This is also compatible with the Xperia 5. You can use the phone as an external screen for your camera, you can also manage settings and send photos wirelessly via the Imaging Edge Mobile app.

The device is powered by the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset with 6GB main memory and 128GB storage memory, which can be expanded with a microSDXC memory card up to a maximum of 512GB. This configuration can also be found in the Xperia 1 launched earlier this year.

The Dual SIM phone is water-resistant and runs on the Android 9 Pie operating system. There is a 3,140 mAh battery built-in with Stamina mode and Xperia Adaptive Charging. Fast charging is also supported, allowing you to charge the phone for 50% in just half an hour.

When can you buy Sony Xperia 5?

The European launch is planned for October 2019. The device will be available in four different colors; black, gray, blue and red, although the red version will not be sold in our country.

From next week it will be possible to place a pre-order, consumers who buy the Xperia 5 during the pre-order period will receive the Sony WF-1000XM3 Wireless Noise-Canceling in-ear headphone with a value of € 250 for free. This promotion is valid until November 3, 2019. Various matching accessories are also available, including a style cover (SCBJ10), a leather protective case (SCLJ10) and a transparent case (SCVJ10).

The new Sony smartphone is already listed on the BelSimpel site where the cell phone is offered for sale for a price of € 800 including VAT, for a separate device (sim lock free). The retailer also states that the telephone will soon be available in combination with a subscription. You can choose from different data bundles, from 1GB data to unlimited internet. So there is something for everyone.
