Microsoft is bringing a new dual-screen smartphone, the Surface Duo. The smartphone has two displays of 5.6-inch displays each which amounts to an 8.3-inch device when unfolded.

Microsoft Surface Duo is expected to join Microsoft’s new line of dual-screen smartphones, the Surface Neo. Not much information has been disclosed by Microsoft regarding the foldable device but it is expected to release sometime in 2020.

The event at New York also saw the release of Windows 10 X software for dual-screen devices. Other devices announced at the event include the Surface Laptop 3, Surface Pro X and Surface Pro 7 tablets, Surface Earbuds and the SQ1 custom Arm chip.

Microsoft had been in a long battle in manufacturing the operating systems for mobile phones and had tried its best to stay relevant in the smartphone market.

However, with a strong opponent like Google, needless to say, Microsoft had always fallen short of something. Microsoft has opted to expand its Office software and other services to rival devices, including iPhones. To take its initiative even further, Microsoft came up with the new smartphones.

There is no doubt that Microsoft’s path to make a stronghold on the smartphone market would not be a cakewalk, especially since it has competition like Apple, Samsung, and Huawei on the market.

In the second quarter, 22% of smartphones shipped in the world were made by Samsung, 17% by Huawei and 11% by Apple, according to Strategy Analytics. Other smartphone companies such as Oppo and/or Xiaomi did not come close to the sales numbers mentioned above and these two tech giants have been in the market longer than Microsoft.

Microsoft is not the first company to come up with a smartphone with dual displays. However, the brand is expecting a grand success over the launch of this dual-screen smartphone, Microsoft Surface Duo.

LG earlier this year showed off a Dual Screen attachment for its first 5G phone, the V50, as well as a version for its LG G8X ThinQ phone. But it failed to create the same buzz as was the case with Samsung and Huawei.
