At the CES 2020, Mercedes went all out and brought out the Avatar movie inspired concept car, called the Mercedes-Benz Vision AVTR. The Avatar movie director, James Cameron helped with the concept of this car. At first glance, the car indeed looks like something out of a Sci-Fi film.

The rear end of the AVTR is covered with what Mercedes is calling “bionic flap” used to communicate with people outside the car. What instantly catches the eye, is its special spherical wheels inspired by the “seeds of the Tree of Souls” from the 2009 blockbuster movie. What is special about these outlandish looking wheels? It can rotate in such a way that the car can move even diagonally.

The inside of the car even has a very futuristic feel with the exclusion of a steering wheel. In place of the steering wheel, there exists a controller that adjusts itself according to the breathing and heartbeat of the driver.

This, however, does not mean that only one person can ride inside the car. The Mercedes team said that the car possesses the ability to detect if the driver’s family members are inside and can adapt accordingly.

Even though Mercedes has not specified what kind of family service it will give out to its drivers, they have mentioned that the parents will be able to monitor their children through the dashboard screen. Moreover, the backseat riders will be privy to learning-oriented gaming and a child-friendly augmented reality experience.

The concept car is powered by a graphene-based organic battery that is compostable, and the interior is made from recycled plastics and vegan leather.

Mercedes, like some other automakers, are looking for ways in which they can minimize their carbon footprint without having to sacrifice its qualities. Cars like the concept car AVTR is on the forefront for Mercedes to achieve its sustainability goals.
