Huawei Patent Infringement

On Monday, July 13, Huawei USA was sued by Cedar Lane Technologies in the Eastern District of Texas for patent infringement.

Cedar Lane Technologies claimed that Huawei had infringed the image related patents-in-suit by using the patented systems in their devices.

Patents like scene recognition, JPEG compression, electro-luminescent devices, a host interface for imaging arrays, and virtual reality cameras and image processing systems were allegedly infringed by Huawei, according to Cedar Lane. Direct, induced, and contributory infringement of ten patients was carried out by Huawei, according to the accusations.

Cedar Lane Technologies, represented by Rabicoff Law, L.L.C, has sought a judgement declaring that patents-in-suit are valid and Huawei is guilty of infringing them.

They have also sought reparations for damages, costs, and fees in the plaintiff. The patents-in-suit in question are United States Patent Numbers- 6.473.527, 6.516.127, 6.566.805, 6.972.774, 6.972.790, 7.292.261, 8.537.242, 9.961.264.

Through the production of the smartphone series Mate Xs, Mate X, Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro, Honor View 10, Honor 8, GR3, GW, Ascend, P10, Y9 and tablet series MediaPad M5, MediaPad M6 and MediaPad T5, Huawei allegedly infringed Claim 8 of the 527 patent, which covers “[a] method for interfacing analog/digital converting means and JPEG compression means, said JPEG compression means having a built-in memory device, comprising the steps of sequentially reading a predetermined number of image lines from the image data output of said analog/digital converting means.”

For instance, Huawei devices support encoding images into JPEG compressed media. By using this image conversion methodology, Huawei allegedly infringes the patent by Cedar Lane. According to Cedar Lane’s plaintiff, by making their employees internally test and use these methodologies, in spite of having knowledge about the patent, Huawei infringes the patent.

Huawei, in February 2020, had filed a lawsuit against Verizon for patent infringement. Following the tensions with China, Chinese brand Huawei has been banned from operating in the US.
