NASA To Hold Its News Conference on SpaceX Crew-1 Mission Tomorrow

NASA will host a news conference tomorrow, starting at 11 a.m. EDT, where it will highlight the first crew rotational flight of a U.S. commercial spacecraft with astronauts at Johnson Space Station near Houston. The conference is supposed to air live on NASA Television and people will also have access to it over NASA’s official website.

The conference will also have the honourable presence of the astronaut crew who are allocated to fly on the mission, namely the SpaceX Crew-1.

This SpaceX Crew-1 mission is due on October 23rd for the official launch. It will be headed by crew members that include, Michael Hopkins, Victor Glover, and Shannon Walker of NASA and Soichi Noguchi of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). It will be heading from the origin of the Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Speaking on the crew members the official site has individually addressed each of the crew members’ proficiency beginning with the commander of the Crew Dragon spacecraft and the Crew-1 mission, Michael Hopkins, who will be leading the flight process, from launching to the re-entry. He will also serve as an Expedition 64 flight engineer aboard the station.

On the other hand, the pilot of the Crew Dragon spacecraft and second-in-command for the mission, Victor Glover will be supervising the spacecraft system and performance. This is going to be his first spaceflight.

The third member, Shanon Walker is a mission specialist, who will be monitoring the vehicle during the launch and the re-entry. She will assist the commander and pilot during the flight. She will also monitor the timelines, telemetry, and consumables, whereas Soichi Noguchi will be present as the mission specialist for Crew-1 mission.

NASA has prohibited any media agency or reporters at their site and has announced a remote participation procedure as expected from the media. The website has bifurcated the event with different time slots, beginning with NASA’s Commercial Crew Program News Conference that is about to last for one and a half hours. It will feature:

  • NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine
  • Kathy Lueders, associate administrator, Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate, NASA Headquarters
  • Phil McAlister, director, Commercial Spaceflight Development, NASA Headquarters
  • Hans Koenigsmann, vice president, Build and Flight Reliability, SpaceX

The second part of the event will hold the Crew-1 Mission Overview, from 12:30 PM onwards, which will have the following participants:

  • Steve Stich, manager, Commercial Crew Program, NASA’s Johnson Space Center
  • Kenny Todd, deputy manager, International Space Station, NASA’s Johnson Space Center
  • Anthony Varaha, NASA flight director, NASA’s Johnson Space Center
  • Benji Reed, senior director, Human Spaceflight Programs, SpaceX ·
  • Junichi Sakai, manager, International Space Station, JAXA

Beginning from 2 PM will be the Crew news conference that is supposed to last for an hour followed by a Round Robin Crew interview 3 PM onwards. The website had earlier accepted the request of participatory and has willingly asked to contact Johnson’s newsroom at 281-483-5111 or jsccommu@mail.nasa.gov, before 5 PM within Friday, September 15th.
