On Jan 6, a Reddit user posted about his Mi Band 5 exploding while it was being charged. The user, Michele Costa, also attached images of the damaged watch along with the post. The images show that the fitness tracker is broken and the screen is completely burnt out.

Costa claimed that the Mi Band 5 was practically new and it started to catch fire after a few minutes of charging. As he was shocked, he reportedly threw it on the floor and stepped on it to put off the fire.

Apparently, there seems to be some previous hardware issue with the fitness band rather than being the user’s fault. According to Costa, he had the global variant of Mi Band 5 which came with the basic Xiaomi 5v 1a charger.

As we all know, the global version already has a dedicated charging cable that attaches magnetically to the fitness tracker and utilizes a USB connector. As usual, Costa was using the official charging cable for charging when the device caught fire.

Going ahead, Costa took his case to Xiaomi about the Mi Band 5 catching fire and has already sent the device back to Amazon. This kind of incident can happen with any devices if there is any battery error, resulting in malfunction and meltdown thereafter. This is why users should charge their devices on a non-flammable surface and often monitor their charging device.

Over the years, there have been several reports of electronic devices catching fire or exploding while charging. The infamous Galaxy Note 7 also had several reports against it with similar issues, costing Samsung an estimated US$17 billion in revenue.

However, this is reportedly the first case for the Xiaomi fitness band. Xiaomi is yet to address the issue officially. The company should carefully observe their production of the bands. Otherwise, this kind of case will be frequent in future.
