Samsung Targets 120Hz LCD Screens With its 90Hz OLED Laptop Displays

In recent times, it has almost become a norm for high-end smartphones to come with screens with very high refresh rates. We’ve seen it happen time and again, with some even reaching a whopping 144Hz. However, these smartphones are merely following the trends and playing catch-up to what we have in laptops and desktop computers, which have long employed the feature. But now, Samsung is setting the pace and showing that there is still room for improvement in the laptops section. The company’s new panel for laptops will pit 90Hz OLED against 120Hz LCD displays. 

For quite a long while now, both LCD and OLED display technologies have been battling it out in the market over supremacy. From monitors to TVs and even to mobile devices. But while some might have taken sides with OLEDs, there are still many undeniable benefits of using LCD screens, especially their refresh rates. LCD screens can go as fast as 240Hz. 

OLED technology may now be starting to catch up to LCD’s monopoly of refresh rates as it looks to push for a new trend in the display market. Samsung recently announced the mass production of its 90Hz OLED panels for laptops, kick-starting another battle between the two renowned display technologies. 

As is well known, LCDs and fast refresh rates are like siblings, but Samsung has always made its case for argument. The firm believes that those higher refresh rates come at a cost, and that is consuming more power than necessary. In all honesty, LCDs really do consume more battery than their equivalent OLEDs. 

Samsung claims that although 90Hz may naturally look worse than 120Hz, its 90Hz OLED comes with a shorter blur length of 0.9mm, a 10% improvement over the blue length of 120Hz LCD.

While Samsung is just making this announcement of the mass production of the panels, its 14-inch 90Hz OLED panels have already been used on the new Vivobook Pro and ASUS Zenbook laptops. In the process of making the announcement, the company also advertised what it says are the first of its kind,16-inch 4K OLED screens that are also already on ASUS laptops.
