Hyundai Motor will test its self-driving service, “RoboRide,” as a pilot program in a district designated for self-driving cars in downtown Seoul in the first half of 2022. Of late, most automobile manufacturers have been engaged in developing self-driving cars. Hyundai had also joined the bandwagon early on, and given how popular the technology is becoming, it was certainly the right move.

Hyundai’s “RoboRide” is operated by Level 4 autonomous driving technology. Level 4 of autonomous driving technology entails that it does not require human drives, in other words, it is fully automated. The automobile manufacturer at the 2021 Seoul Mobility Show that was held at the KINTEX convention center in Goyang, Seoul, shared with the public the development the company has made in Level 4 autonomous driving, and also shared details about its testing phase in the upcoming year.

The head of the company’s autonomous driving center Jang Woong-Jun said in a statement, “Hyundai Motor is developing self-driving technology that allows everyone to move safely and comfortably based on our philosophy of ‘universal safety’ and ‘selective convenience.” He further added that as time progresses on the company will share more details about its test-operating process. Jang added that the company, “Will continue to develop autonomous driving technologies that can move safely and conveniently in a more complex on-road driving environment.”

Hyundai Motor has manufactured the electric car called IONIQ 5, and the company is planning to use this car for testing out its Level 4 autonomous driving technology. Moreover, the company has also unveiled a short video clip of its other electric car called Nexo which is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. The short video clip which was aired at the motor show showed the car driving around a city using its Level 4 driving technology.

Additionally, at the motor show, the company announced that it has decided to increase the number of EV charging stations across the country.
