Reports have today that the Chinese display panel giant BOE Technology is gearing up to supply Apple with OLED displays for future iPad and MacBook models.

The Chinese display panel giant is currently assembling a Gen 8.6, 2250x2600mm IT OLED panel production line at its B16 factory in China, featuring a 15,000 substrates capacity per month. By estimation, the new display lineup is expected to be rolled out by the end of 2024.

By supplying Apple with these OLED panels for future iPad and MacBook models, BOE Technology intends to compete with Samsung Display and LG Display of South Korea.

Both Samsung and LG are known to be employing Gen 6 production lines for their first OLED panels for iPads, before switching to Gen 8.5 for a variety of Apple gadgets that will emerge after the first iPad model with an OLED display is released. Gen 8.5 production lines produce more OLED panels per substrate and are hence more cost-effective than the Gen 6 lines.

Similarly, the display panel giant is also reported to be experimenting with two-stack tandem OLED technology, which has the potential to provide more brightness and lifespan. Because iPads and MacBooks are frequently used for longer periods of time than smartphones, two-stack tandem OLED panels are better suited for them.

Also, reports have revealed that Apple plans to release its first iPad model with OLED panels in 2024, While, it’s the first MacBook with an OLED panel will be released in 2025, assuming the success of the new 11- and 12.9-inch OLED iPad Pro models.

Currently, BOE Technology is in discussions with Canon Tokki, the world’s largest deposition equipment manufacturer, about developing deposition equipment for Gen 8.6 half cut. However, the Chinese display behemoth has yet to request a development slot for Canon Tokki. Stay connected with Techgenyz for more updates on the upcoming OLED panel.
