In an interview with a Chinese journalist on China Daily USA, today, Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook reiterated how excited he is by AR, but now also emphasized how the company is working to make products that put humanity at the center of it.

Tim Cook was asked by China Daily’s Ma Si about his thoughts on Chinese consumers’ enthusiasm for Apple’s virtual and augmented reality products, as well as their unhappiness with present market offerings.

In his response, he stated that “placing humans at the centre of things” is a key aspect of AR, and he mentioned that there are over 14,000 ARkit apps in the App Store. This mainly points to the AR experiences available for the iPhone 13, but he then goes on to say that Apple is still in the very early innings of how this technology will evolve.

More significantly, Cook says we should keep tuned for what the Cupertino tech behemoth has in store. Apple has yet to formally reveal anything about its expected AR/VR headset, but leaks and reports indicate that it is in the works. While Cook does not elaborate on what we should expect, it is expected to be a mixed reality headgear – and it could be available soon.

In his words: “Right now, as an example, we have over 14,000 ARKit apps in the App Store which provide AR experiences for millions of people around the world,” he continued. “But I think despite that, we’re still in the very early innings of how this technology will evolve.”

“I couldn’t be more excited about the opportunities we’ve seen in this space,” said Cook, “and sort of stay tuned, and you’ll see what we have to offer.”

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had predicted that the head-mounted display will debut in late 2022, with MacBook Pro-level power. According to him, Apple’s VR headset would use a 96W USB-C power adaptor, implying that the HMD will have the same processing capacity as an M1 MacBook, and possibly the more powerful M1 Pro or M1 Max. As previously reported, Apple’s VR headgear will be a stand-alone gadget, unattached to the Mac or iPhone. In addition, hints about reality have been discovered.

Recall that we had earlier reported this year that Apple’s first mixed reality headset will be equipped with Wi-Fi 6/6E for a better wireless experience, and it is expected to compete with other highly anticipated VR products due to launch in 2022, such as Meta’s rumored high-end VR headset Project Cambria.
