Back in 2020, the United States of America’s Department of Justice instituted a lawsuit against the world tech giant Google for violating antitrust laws. According to the department, the suit was instituted to stop Google from unlawfully maintaining monopolies through anticompetitive and exclusionary practices in the search and search advertising markets and to remedy the competitive harms.

Since then, antitrust investigations have been troubling for big tech companies. In recent years, the likes of Facebook and Google have been targeted in antitrust lawsuits. However, in the latest report, it appears that Apple is now the new target for monopolizing.

According to a report by TechNews, the U.S. Justice Department is preparing an antitrust action against Apple, alleging that the company used its market dominance to discourage rivals who made hardware and developed apps for tiny technology companies, including AirTag. The potential monopoly of the App Store has been contested in court numerous times in Europe, but this is the first time the American government has acted.

Although the specifics of the complaint are still hazy, and it might be decided not to proceed after further investigation, the revelation alone is sufficient to put Apple under pressure. Big tech firms excel at utilizing their “ecosystems” to provide products with a distinct competitive edge and retain customers, but this frequently prompts concerns about monopoly. Apple has often highlighted that its ecosystem creates a win-win situation by enabling a sizable number of third-party app developers to survive.

However, it should be noted that the Apple investigation is one of a series of efforts by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission to rein in the mammoth tech companies.

As it stands now, the apple lawsuit is still unclear yet, and it may be decided not to sue after meticulous investigation, but the news itself is enough to put Apple under pressure. Thus, stay connected with TechGenyz as we bring you the latest updates in the tech world.
