In line with the major push into gaming being made by cloud streaming providers, Netflix has opened yet another studio. Netflix is expanding its gaming presence by establishing a brand-new cloud gaming studio in the US in Southern California, led by former Overwatch producer Chako Sonny.

The announcement of the new Netflix cloud gaming studio was made at this week’s TechCrunch Disrupt 2022 by Netflix Vice President of Games Mike Verdu, who also elaborated on the firm’s long-term goals in interactive entertainment, including the possibility of a game streaming service.
“We’re really considering a cloud gaming solution so that we can reach members on TVs and PCs”, Verdu said. “We’re going to start small, be humble, be thoughtful, and then grow out, just like we did with mobile. But we feel it’s a step we should make in order to meet consumers on the devices they use to watch Netflix.”
The only information provided regarding the new Netflix cloud gaming studio was the declaration that Sonny would assume leadership and that it will be opening in Southern California. Besides Sonny, Netflix has not yet disclosed what projects its new studio will be working on.
With the Stadia cloud gaming services, Google made an attempt to do precisely that, giving consumers access to a collection of video games without the need for a gaming console or any specific device. However, Google recently announced that Google Stadia would be shut down by January 2023 after it failed to sustain itself and saw its user base decline.
Verdu remarked, “Stadia was a technological success. “Playing games on Stadia was enjoyable. Yes, there were some problems with the business model.”
Following Google Stadia’s closure, Netflix is looking into the idea of offering a cloud gaming solution. It’s possible that they would have made a different strategy after analyzing Stadia’s failure. As major tech firms struggle to find a way to distribute these enormous games to a wider audience, cloud gaming is gradually becoming more prevalent.
