In a bid to enhance 5G technology network service, Nokia announced today it had signed a new cross-license patent agreement with Samsung. The new agreement followed the initial agreement between the duo firms, which expired at the end of 2022.

Under the agreement, which covers Nokia’s fundamental inventions in 5G and other technologies, Samsung will make payments to Nokia for a multi-year period beginning 1 January 2023. The terms of the agreement remain confidential between the parties.

The 5G Patent agreement is in line with the presumptions Nokia stated in the commentary on its long-term prognosis for Nokia Technologies in its financial report for the third quarter and the period from January to September 2022, which was released on October 20, 2022.

Approximately 20,000 patent families, including over 4,500 identified as important to 5G, make up Nokia’s market-leading patent portfolio, based on more than €130 billion invested in R&D since 2000.

In exchange for the ability to license them under FRAND (fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory) terms, Nokia contributes its innovations to open standards. Without having to make significant expenditures for the standards themselves, businesses can license and use these technologies, encouraging innovation and the creation of new goods and services for customers.

Speaking on the new 5G Patent agreement, Jenni Lukander, President of Nokia Technologies, said it would strengthen Nokia’s patent portfolio, contributing to cellular standards and other technologies while allowing both firms the opportunity to innovate.

“Samsung is a leader in the smartphone industry, and we are delighted to have reached an amicable agreement with them. The agreement gives both companies the freedom to innovate, and reflects the strength of Nokia’s patent portfolio, decades-long investments in R&D and contributions to cellular standards and other technologies.”
