In the last few years, Apple has been reportedly working on virtual reality, augmented reality, or mixed reality headsets. But it seems the company is not serious about it as other brands in the tech industry like HTC have unveiled their AR/VR headset after Apple announced the development of the device.

Surprisingly, it appears a new challenger is about to enter the market as Samsung is reportedly developing new XR processor chips to compete with Apple. Although the upcoming WWDC 2023 is likely to bring into life the first Apple reality devices. As known not too long ago, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed some expected features of the upcoming Apple AR/VR headset.

Samsung is Developing XR Chips to Compete with Apple

As we all know that Qualcomm is currently leading the development of chips for XR devices which comprises virtual reality, VR, augmented reality, AR, and mixed reality, MR. Last November, the firm introduced the Snapdragon AR2, the newest series of XR CPUs. The chip is primarily intended for wearable devices like augmented reality headsets.

However, in development, a report has just confirmed that Samsung Electronics is considering developing a new processor just for XR devices, while it might be based on the Exynos series processors already in the market. The sources claimed without elaborating that Samsung Electronics’ plans to enter the chip market for XR devices are currently outlined.

Accordingly, if the report is factual, it looks like Samsung is set to challenge Apple in the XR devices market. Although the present Exynos series chip system is still based on mobile devices, it might eventually need to be modified. However, it might have different results if this series of chips are used on some XR devices that don’t need great performance.

Meanwhile, in similar news, there have been reports that Samsung may halt the Exynos series’ development, but the company has already denied the claims. But it is true that Exynos 2200, the most recent flagship CPU from Samsung, performs less well than comparable products from Snapdragon and MediaTek.
